About Us

Homebody Essentials is a Saskatoon based company in Saskatchewan, Canada. We are the owners - Kyla + Darren - we are recent empty nesters and retirement from our day jobs is just around the corner.

A few years ago I found some spare time since all of the kids moved out and began to do some crafting. I experimented with a few things and eventually really got into making candles. I was having a hard time with commercially available candles giving me headaches from the use of the fragrance oils.

Little did I know at that time that this would be the beginning of a journey into the use of essential oils in our home and what would eventually turn into a small business.

But first - let's talk about the art of creativity! In my regular job I found that this was lacking. I recognize that I was likely a workaholic - many people who worked with me over the years definitely knew that. I am a police officer and spent most of my career in investigations - so figuring out how to solve the mystery has definitely been engrained in my brain for many years. So to learn how to create the products I do today has been a similar challenge  but also a creative one. I have found since I have began distracting myself with creating the products I make, that I have been able to "turn off" work. I am checking my work phone less and not thinking about work when I am at home. The art of creating has given me an outlet from work related stress and I am grateful for that more than you know. Our small business is truly a win-win because I need that creative outlet for positive mental health - while still passing on great products and pricing to our customers.

As I mastered the art of making candles (there was a lot more to it than I first imagined!) - I began researching and experimenting with self care products. Similar to candles, I have always found that many self care products are fragranced with perfumes or fragrance oils that have bothered me. I can count the times that I purchased something from the store thinking it would be ok, only to wear it for a day and be stuffed up and have a headache - our daughters were lucky as they always got my leftovers that I couldn't end up using.

I also started really looking at the cost of self care products. As I began making some of my own and learning about the different ingredients - I have learned that self care products are typically overinflated and cost way more than they actually cost to make. Most self care products are wholesaled which involves the middle man's profit. Generally in society, we have normalized paying a lot of money for the products we need to take good care of ourselves. For me personally, I have spent thousands on brand name products for my face, skin and hair over time without batting an eye. Paying $60 for a half ounce jar of eye cream has just become a part of what I do.

This dawned on me as a great opportunity to give back to people where we wouldn't have a middle man in our small business. I could make the products, still run a profit, while you the customer gets to purchase the product for less than you would at a pharmacy or beauty store. Again, truly a win win.

I have made it my mission to create the products I have used in my own self care routine more naturally and for less money that what I have paid over the years. I am not quite done but I will continue to add products to our self care line as I master this art.

The use of essential oils in my products is extremely important to me - you will never find synthetic fragrances in any of our products. Using essential oils instead of fragrance oils is definitely more expensive to me - but it is worth it to have truly natural products that you can use with confidence. I no longer have to worry about getting headaches from products I am using on my body -if you can relate to this then I encourage you to check out our line of natural self care products.

Every ingredient is assessed for its necessity in the formula and also for its benefits. If we don't need it then it isn't included.

As we round the bend towards retirement as we turn 50, we are excited to officially launch our business that we have been working so hard on for the last few years to develop. If you ever have any questions please feel free to reach out!
