Our Candle Story

I was finding that any candle I would buy at a store was bothering me when I would light it - even not lighting it - the smell that would come off was typically overpowering and very fragrant. Although it smelled nice, I was looking for something more subtle that didn't bother me as much. I wouldn't say I am allergic but I was noticing I was getting mild headaches and my nose would start running.

Our teenage daughter was really into Bath + Body Works candles for a period of time - she had been gifted several from her boyfriends mom. These candles were beautiful and lovely but I was finding I couldn't even have them in the house with the lid on as the smell was way too overpowering.

I got to thinking about making my own candles as I was having trouble finding something on the market that was affordable that was either unscented or infused with a more natural fragrance option. I began ray research and began making candles infused with essential oils using soy and coconut wax.

There is definitely controversy around the use of essential oils in candles. I have found since joining many social media groups that many candle makers strongly recommend not using essential oils and to stick with synthetic fragrance oils in candles. As I have continued researching and experimenting it feels that many of these claims are unfounded and broad sweeping with not a lot of research to back up these claims.

Fragrance oils are definitely easier to use and also cheaper for the candle maker. Through my research I have learned that there are hundreds of different essential oils on the market. Many of them ARE unsafe to use in candle making. That is why you will notice I use only a select number of essential oils in our candles. I do believe that essential oils are safe to use in candles- not necessarily all of them - but the ones that come out of my shop have been personally tested in my home with success. I have been burning them in my home for several years now and I do not experience the same reactions as I was when burning fragrance oil based candles.

Using essential oils in candles also results in a milder scent. If you are looking for a super fragrant overpowering fragrance then our candles are not likely right for you. Our candles have a subtle scent that doesn't overtake your space.

Is my home toxin free? Not yet. I have started making more mindful decisions about the products I use and the burning of essential oil candles is one of them. My home smells fresher and less artificial with the natural aroma of essential oil candles.

As I began making candles I soon realized there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. There is an incredible amount of trial and error with testing waxes and wicks to get the candles burning properly. See our Candle Care Instruction Guide for more details on how to properly burn your candle to get the most out of your purchase.

Some of our candle vessels are purchased from suppliers. There are a variety of beautiful options available including our 12 ounce Aura frosted glass candles - I can't get over the beauty of the three colours we have that will add elegance to your space no matter what season. We also love the frosted amber glass option with the gold lid as they are classic and match any decor.

We also make some of our own candle vessels - yes that's right - some of our candles are hand poured right from the container up! We use an eco friendly product called Jesmonite to create beautiful candle vessels that are truly unique. We have a selection in stock listed in our shop - but if you are looking for a custom color - please reach out to us by email to discuss.

No matter what the vessel type - all of our candles are handcrafted in small batches - hand labeled and packaged with care. We hope you love our candles as much as we love making them for you!
